Banquete - Like most of his colleagues, Banquete athletic director and head football coach Kevin Hermes has a lot of trouble to all his players in the weight room during the summer months. It helps to have someone like Ricky Benavides, though.
The junior defender and outside linebacker has the offseason program, by increasing a kind of personal trainer for several players. Hermes is known that the group be far ahead of the game when starting two-a-day practices in early August
"Ricky is crazy about the gym," said Hermes. "In the spring he had a few friends with him, that he put through a workout. Later I saw that he had two more children with him. Then there were five other children. He shall provide them with more things than go through we have . When I see that I try not to mess with him. We just have to see it all in the season to continue. "
The Defense Class 2A Division II state champion Refugio one of seven district foes, Benavides certainly knows how important the use of summer workouts. For Benavides, it's better than wasting time at home - despite the comfort of air conditioning.
"At a time comes around to the football season, we are all more than ready," said Benavides, the 16-2A Div. Beginner II of the season last year. "It's easy to become lazy, but the weight room you need to talk to people and things to do. It is not at all really boring. It's better than bored at home."
It's not like today's athletes have no choice.
"There are lots of things," said Hermes. "We did some work and some children are learning in school technical training in the area of Corpus Christi, like soldering and other jobs so. They played an active role in 7-on-7 at last in the six weeks and also in two basketball leagues in a variety of breath and Kingsville to play basketball league. They were really active, and that's what I want to see. I know it's important to enjoy the summer, but I need to know whether they are affected and do something. I've been happy together. "
The Bulldogs can not say the same thing last offseason.
Benavides said a lack of effort in the summer cost the team during the regular season, which resulted in a third place in the neighborhood behind Refugio and Riviera. Banquete then Schulenburg lost 51-28 in the first round.
With players like Benavides leads the charge, hoping that the Bulldogs to surpass this effort.
"There's a lot more people who come to work this year. Last year there were practically none," said Benavides. "We proved that we can do better."
So far, Hermes said that visitor numbers are encouraging offseason.
"We were about 30-40 children on average per day," he said. "It started in the early summer, and so on in this way. So we can get to 40 children each day throughout the summer is not so bad. It begins to pick up here in the next two weeks."
The more the show, minus the phone with Hermes. He said the coaching staff made sure the players to warn of the consequences.
"We have have have a few kids who are extremely dedicated and want to improve and the best they can be. That Did those who do not have to push around. Then, other, you have to remember that it is 110 degree will be the first day of practice, "said Hermes. "If you will do nothing but sit on your ass to be hard. If you are not staying in shape, you will not be on the bench. With the requirements of the website (University Interscholastic League) to us, you must be another day begins in shorts before going to shoulder. This accumulate. Until then we can be in the first melee and you're not ready to play. All depends on what you want out of the season. We need the opportunity to be have a real competitive advantage, but you must be prepared accordingly.
"I'm going to show me happier than to see 60 of them to start at the gym."
